Alfred University’s Herrick Memorial Library is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Instructional Librarian with the rank of Assistant Librarian and an academic year appointment, beginning in August 2008 and reporting to the Library Director. Three additional weeks of summer work are expected. Alfred University is a comprehensive university of 2,300 students, located in Western New York, and is the second oldest coeducational institution in the nation. Bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees are offered.

Responsibilities: The Instructional Librarian will oversee expansion of Alfred University's information literacy instructional program; coordinate and provide classroom-based instructional sessions; oversee assessment activities for Herrick Library, coordinate them with the University's activities, ensure that our progress is being measured regularly, and report results; oversee reference services and collections; develop web-based subject guides and instruction; work collaboratively with the Systems Librarian to develop new web-based services; provide research assistance and develop new applications for electronic reference; supervise staff or students as assigned; develop policies aligned with current best practices; provide collection development in specified disciplines; serve as liaison to specified academic departments; participate in strategic planning; serve on library and university committees; and engage in professional activity and continuing education. Librarians have full faculty status and are expected to meet all faculty responsibilities.

In addition, the Instructional Librarian will:

  • Assess student learning outcomes in information literacy
  • Coordinate and participate in the library’s reference services
  • Evaluate resources for inclusion in “Research by Subject” on the library website
  • Evaluate and recommend new electronic databases
  • Oversee and maintain the reference collection
  • Manage the leased McNaughton Collection, supporting the recreational interests of the University community
  • Help create and update library brochures and publicity material
  • Coordinate communications with library users, soliciting feedback on library effectiveness

Required qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS; broad education in library/information science; experience or demonstrated interest in teaching and information literacy; strong analytical, evaluative, planning, organizational, and decision making skills; excellent communication skills; ability to provide creative solutions to problems; tolerance for ambiguity and the ability to respond effectively to organizational change; ability to organize and deliver work on a deadline; capacity to work effectively and congenially; strong service commitment to library patrons; experience or demonstrated interest in personal scholarly achievement; comfort with technology.

Preferred qualifications: knowledge of instructional technology; knowledge of current approaches to searching for information; experience with HTML and web editing; second master’s degree.
