Herrick Memorial Library at Alfred University

Laptop Lending Program

Eligibility

You must present a photo ID and you must have a valid Herrick library account to check-out a laptop. You may not borrow a laptop if you have more than $25 in fines or if you previously violated the Laptop Loan Agreement. Photo IDs will be held until the laptop is returned.

Lending agreement

All borrowers must read and sign the Laptop Loan Agreement.

Availability

Laptops are provided on a first-come, first-served basis at the front desk of Herrick library. If all laptops are out on loan, you will receive a pager and will be notified when a laptop becomes available. If no pagers are available, you may wait for one to be returned. Users may not reserve laptops in advance.

Use

Laptops may be used in the library only. The laptop should be transported with the cover closed, and food and beverages should be kept away. Borrowers must abide by the University’s Policy for the Use of Computing Facilities at Alfred University. Laptops should not be altered in anyway.

Saving files

Anything saved to a laptop will be deleted when it is returned to the front desk. Some options for saving work are: save it to your U: drive; save it to a USB Flash Drive; save it to CD/DVD; or e-mail documents to yourself as attachments. Remember, save your work early and often.

Printing
Laptops will print to the laserjet printer in the Learning Commons on the first floor of Herrick library. If you need help with printing, please ask at the front desk.

Loan period

The loan period is two hours. Laptops are due 30 minutes prior to library closing time. The person who checked out the laptop must be the person who returns the laptop.

Renewals

At the end of the two-hour lending period, you may renew the laptop in person if no other users are waiting. The laptop must be brought to the front desk for renewal.

Liability and responsibilities of borrowers

The borrower is responsible if the laptop is lost, stolen, or damaged. You are strongly advised never to leave the laptop unattended and not to ask someone else to watch the laptop for you, since it is YOUR responsibility when it is checked out to you. If necessary, return it to the service desk for safekeeping.

You agree to assume liability for the cost of repair or replacement in the event of loss due to theft, damage, negligence or misuse. Laptops 24 hours overdue will be considered lost and your Alfred University student account will be billed for the replacement cost ($1,200). A repair fee will be charged for damaged laptops based on the cost of repair, not to exceed $1,200. Do not attempt to make repairs to the laptop yourself.

Fines

A fine of $1.00 per hour will be charged when laptops are returned late. Late fees are to be paid at the time the laptop is returned. Laptops 24 hours overdue will be considered lost and you will be held responsible for the replacement cost of the laptop ($1,200).

Equipment problems

Any problems with the laptop should be reported immediately to the front desk. Do not attempt to make repairs yourself and never remove any components of the laptop. The library does not assume responsibility for lost files due to viruses, hardware failure, power failure, or network interruptions.

Software

The following software is included on the laptop: Microsoft Office (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Word, Internet Explorer, Picture Manager), Adobe Reader, Nero 6 Suite (for writing to CD or DVD), RealPlayer (for playing audio files), QuickTime (for playing videos), Ebrary reader (used for reading electronic books in the Ebrary collection), and SciFinder Scholar.
